Rochester and his Economy

Rochester calls itself the "World's Image Centre" which is true in industrial and academic point of view. In the year 1853 John Bausch and Henry Lomb opened a small shop for optical devices. The result was later a global company for ophthalmic surgical and contact lens. Bausch & Lomb advertise themselves as "Eye Care Company" and are known outside of health care for the "Ray-Ban-glasses".

In the 1880s a bank employee named George Eastman experimented with photographic materials in his mother's kitchen. These experiments eventually led to the Eastman Kodak Company. The Xerox Corporation was founded in 1906 in Rochester. The prosperity of Kodak promoted the growth of the city until the 1960s. Then the town got to feel difficult economic change. This negative image of the city tries to get away today.
